Subject: Johann Nicholas Shonberger Date: Sun, 13 Dec 1998 14:53:38 -0500 From: "Mark B. Arslan" To: Ed Wevodau CC: Schoeneberger-l@rootsweb.com, Linda Bell References: 1 Yes, this seems to confirm that John, George, and Nicholas Schonberger on the 1790 list of members of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, Lancaster Co., PA were the same ones who came over on the ship Adolph to Philadelphia in 1785. (Thank goodness Catharina Maria Weidmann had her full name spelled out in the passenger list and in the baptism record for her son Johann Georg. Was she John's second wife after Anna Weber?) Now we just have to link this Johann Nicholas Schonberger of Lancaster County with Nicholas Shamberger of Dauphin and Cumberland County. The marriage of "Nicholaus Schaumburg" to Barbara Schmid (of Hempfield Twp.) on 23 Jan 1791 in the First Reformed Church in Lancaster would likely be the Nicholas of nearby Manheim (although the 1790 Lancaster County census shows an umarried Nicholas Schonborg in Cocalico Twp. - same one???). We know that Nicholas Shamberger was married to a Barbara ---- somewhere around 1790 or so in this part of Pennsylvania. According to a letter written by a descendant in 1923 (Julia Grace Shamberger), Nicholas came to America from Hesse-Kassel, Germany "about three years after the Revolutionary War" [which ended in 1781] and landed in New York and from there to Lancaster, PA and then to Harrisburg, PA. He left one brother Henry and also a sister in Germany. The year of arrival in America would be about right. Going to Lancaster, PA before Harrisburg is right, too. The things that don't match are the arrival in New York (instead of Philadelphia), Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse Castle, as Julia puts it), and the brother Henry (with no mention of close family in Lancaster County). I believe that Hesse-Kassel is actually about 100 km (or 60 miles) north of Ober-Mossau, Odenwald, Hesse, Germany (where the Schonberger family originated). Perhaps this and the arrival in New York and brother Henry are just the result of family tradition being clouded by the passage of 138 years (between 1785 and 1923). Herb (Senft), where did the exact birthdate for Johann Nicholas Schonberger come from? He may (repeat, may) have been the Johann Nicholas Schonberger on the passenger list of the ship Adolph, which arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1785. There is a Schoeneberger Resource Center at http://members.aol.com/amshene/Schoen/, as well as a mailing list for this family. We can't declare success yet, but this is the most promising thing I've seen so far. We really need to find what happened to this family group after they arrived in Philadelphia and, particularly, if any other family can "lay claim" to this Johann Nicholas Schonberger, who arrived in 1785 at the age of 22. If any of you have more information or comments on this topic, please let me know. Based on what you have in your note, it looks like we can tentatively identify the folks on the 1785 Adolph passenger list. The notations in brackets are mine: Hend'k Smucker [Appolonia's husband] Appilunia Smucker [Appolonia (1742)] ... Johannes Schonberger [(1739)] Eliz. Cath. Schonberger [Elisa Catharina, daughter of Johannes (1739)] Elizabeth Schonberger [Anna Elisabetha, daughter of Johannes (1739)] Appalona Schonberger [Appolonia (1776), daughter of Johannes (1739)] Cath'a Schonberger [Catharina Margaretha, daughter of Johannes (1739)] Johann Nich's Schonberger [Johann Nicholas (6 Nov 1762), son of Johannes (1739)] ... George Schonberger [either Georg Jakob, son of Johann Nikolaus (1744), or Johan Georg, brother of Johann Nikolaus (1744)] Peter Schonberger [son of Johann Nikolaus (1744)] A birthdate of 6 Nov 1762 would be about right for my Nicholas Shamberger! What do you think? I'd sure like to find this Brandy Petricone. I don't find her in the address or e-mail searches on Yahoo. Thanks for the great lead!
